Tyrannus emerged from the UK underground in 2018, shaping their sound around death-thrashing black metal with a cold, violent edge. Their debut album "Unslayable" gave them a raw identity, and now "Mournhold", released through True Cult Records, shows a band pushing that identity into darker, broader territory. The line-up for this release features Callum John Cant on lead vocals and guitars, Alistair Harley on bass guitar, additional guitars and backing vocals, Richard Codling on guitars and backing vocals, Alasdair Dunn on drums and backing vocals, and Scott Mclean on keyboards and synthesizers.

“Mournhold” acts as a calculated expansion of the territorial warfare Tyrannus started years ago. The sonic output infuses 80s thrash metal with atmospheric black metal and cold post-punk elements, driving the tracks into a vast wasteland without losing the central, aggressive trajectory. The production handled by Scott McLean at Neon Fable

Studios in Edinburgh, alongside the mastering job by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege, injects a lethal precision into the guitars ofCallum John Cant and Richard Codling, while the rhythm section of Alistair Harley and Alasdair Dunndrives the tempo forward. Keyboard lines from Scott Mclean add a grim layer to the background, preventing the attack from becoming a standard, one-dimensional beatdown.

The material on this sophomore release avoids the trap of mindless speed, opting instead for a calculated pacing that forces the listener into a bleak, desolate state of mind. Tracks like “Violent Inheritance”, “Orbus Non Suffict”, and “Seizing Stars” forge a cold connection with the album title, building a literal hold of mourning through relentless riffing and a dark, oppressive aura. The mid-album assault continues through “Flesh Eternal” and “Reignfall”, leading into the title track “Mournhold” and the lengthy closing march of “Back To Grey”. The vocal delivery of Callum John Cant remains a harsh, piercing roar that spews out the lyrics with absolute malice. It is a calculated, cold, and vicious extreme metal release that hits with sharp intent, proving that Tyrannus can expand their sonic boundaries while keeping the core of their metal completely lethal and uncompromising.
