Nicarus is the solo project of Tali Green, an independent artist from Israel who has been shaping her own path since 2017. She writes, performs, records, produces, and engineers her music herself, working through her own GreenLab Studio, with past recording steps also linked to places such as Electrical Audio in Chicago and Urban Sound Studio in Norway. On stage, Nicarus also works as a one-woman live act, using real gear, amps, and a full setup, so this is far from a lazy laptop project hiding behind smoke and slogans.
“Degree Of Doneness” is a release born directly out of severe conflict, written in a mere three days under conditions of war. That frantic urgency is obvious throughout the tracks, providing an unfiltered layer of reality. The sound mixes stoner rock structures with grunge elements and a dark, blackened atmosphere. There is a dedication to honesty here, including a tribute to the Iranian people through a Persian poem embedded into the material to oppose political division.
However, the final result sits firmly in the middle of the road. The one-woman live approach using real amplifiers and zero shortcuts is respectable, but on the actual record, the material drags. The underground aesthetic is present, yet the songs lack the definitive hooks or devastating arrangements required to truly dominate the listener. The vocal delivery alternates between post-grunge styles and aggressive tones, but the compositions frequently lose momentum. It is an honest effort that avoids mainstream trends, but it lacks the necessary power to be something truly essential for the metal underground.
