The Order is a Swiss hard rock and heavy metal band with almost two decades behind them. Their current line-up features Gianni Pontillo on vocals, Bruno Spring on guitars, Alain Schwaller on bass and Mauro “Tschibu” Casciero on drums. Through the years they have built their name on riff-based songwriting, classic metal energy and a clear hard rock edge, with “Empires” arriving through Massacre Records as their new studio album.

“Empires” is a mature release from The Order, and that maturity is heard in the songwriting, not in safe playing. The album has a strong classic hard rock base, a heavy metal pulse and choruses that aim for the head without begging for attention. “Fight For Your Rights” and “Empires” show the main character of the album, big riffs, clear hooks and a voice that gives the songs a strong front line.

Gianni Pontillo is one of the main reasons the album works. His vocals have range, power and character, giving the songs enough personality without turning the album into a singer’s show. Bruno Spring’s guitars give the album its main shape, with riffs that are easy to follow and leads that serve the songs. The rhythm section of Alain Schwaller and Mauro “Tschibu” Casciero does its job with a firm hand, keeping the album grounded and focused.

The lyrical side deals with political power, manipulation, war, greed and collapse, and the band handles these themes in a clear way. It is not poetry for the sake of sounding deep. The songs speak in plain terms, and that helps the album. The production by V.O. Pulver at Little Creek Studios gives “Empires” a strong sound, modern enough to hit with force, classic enough to remain close to the band’s roots.

The album is not perfect. Some parts follow expected hard rock and heavy metal paths, and a few choruses work better than others. Even so, “Empires” has enough quality, energy and songwriting focus to stand as a good chapter in The Order’s catalogue. It is honest, strong and easy to return to, with no useless decoration around it.
