Somnia Finem is a new Portuguese black metal project, with "Desassossego" as its first full length release through Signal Rex. The core credits place composition, performance, and production with Sonho, lyrics and proclamations with Aetheria, and vocals and proclamations with Pesadelo. Guest work comes from Vilkacis of Derrames on drums, Erik of Soerd on additional vocals, Angelo Simões on drum production, and Nidernes in the creative process of the instruments.

"Desassossego" is black metal with a desolate Portuguese character and a southern European pulse. It is underground, rough in spirit, and far from polished comfort. The guitars twist around sorrowful melodies, the vocals sound buried in unrest, and the drums give the album a stern march that stops it from becoming shapeless noise. There is a cold  romantic streak in the music, closer to late 90s black metal from Italy, France and Greece than to the more primitive Portuguese underground sound many listeners may expect from the label.

The album’s main strength is the way it uses melody, dissonance, and ghostly pacing. Somnia Finem does not go only for savagery. They build a feverish state of mind, where the riffs blur, return, and twist into something uneasy. "Desassossego" has elegance in places, sickness in others, and its darker romantic side gives the album more depth than a plain blast of black metal aggression.

For a debut, "Desassossego" is a good first strike from Somnia Finem. It has character, a strong concept, and enough black metal substance to deserve more than one spin. It needs more killer moments and less wandering, although the foundation is already there. Imperfect, intriguing, and above average.
