Wooden Shadow is the solo project of Finnish musician Jeremia Ponto, formed in Ylöjärvi in 2020. Ponto writes the material, performs every part and handles the vocals, giving the project a personal character rooted in melodic metal, folk metal, melodic death metal and black metal. Its lyrical ground circles around nature, death, inner darkness and the more damaged corners of human thought. Across its releases, Wooden Shadow has developed as an outlet with no committee behind it and no outside hands shaping its direction. That independence gives Ponto freedom to move between aggression, melody and folk based atmosphere without answering to a fixed lineup. “Age Of Tree” continues that path through five songs built around pride, celebration, grief, anger and calm, with each emotion treated as part of the same northern landscape. The project’s solitary setup also explains the consistency running through the writing, since every choice comes from one source and follows one personal vision.
Released by Inverse Records, “Age Of Tree” is compact, focused and far more complete than the term mini album may suggest. The production gives the guitars enough definition to separate the melodic lines from the darker riffing, while the drums support the faster sections. The arrangements change pace often enough to prevent the five song structure from becoming predictable, and the guitar melodies give the darker sections shape, and folk elements appear as part of the writing process. The vocals move across rougher and more melodic territory, helping the emotional shifts register without making the EP sound fragmented. Lyrically, the release stays close to Wooden Shadow’s central subjects, nature becomes a mirror for isolation, mortality and conflict within the mind. Its main quality is balance. Melodies appear in large measure, though the darker edge is never reduced to background color. A few passages need stronger transitions, and some ideas end before reaching their full potential, signs of a project that could benefit from a longer format. Even so, “Age Of Tree” has substance, good songwriting and enough variation to hold attention across its concise length. Ponto’s one man approach does not come across as a limitation. It gives the EP unity and a personal stamp, with no wasted detours or empty padding. This is a convincing step forward for Wooden Shadow, brief, controlled and richer than many releases twice its size.
