Wyrmhaven formed in Tucson in 2018 and have spent the following years developing a hybrid of melodic death metal, progressive metal and early metalcore. The current lineup consists of Nick Cowan on guitars, Stephen Majalca on drums, Keith Huffman on bass, Travis Skye on lead guitars and Steve Naemark on vocals. Their earlier material leaned heavily toward fast Gothenburg styled riffing, while later writing introduced more involved arrangements, heavier rhythmic sections and darker emotional themes. “Seasons Of Gloom” is their debut full length album, arriving after several years of lineup development and gradual changes in their songwriting approach.
“Seasons Of Gloom” is built around rapid melodic guitar lines, controlled drumming and blunt metalcore chugs. The songs are compact, with enough variation to stop the album from becoming one long attack of interchangeable riffs. “Morning Star” brings one of its most effective combinations of speed and rhythmic impact, while “Unrelenting Storms” uses slower passages and mournful guitar work to underline the album’s
themes of loss, stagnation and personal collapse. Some transitions between melodic death metal sections and breakdown based passages are predictable, and several riffs follow patterns heard many times across modern extreme metal. Even so, the writing has discipline, the choruses arrive at the right moments and the musicians rarely bury a song beneath unnecessary ideas. Production from Wyrmhaven and Ryan Bram gives the guitars definition, the drums a firm attack and the vocals enough space above the lower frequencies. Zack Ohren’s mix and master maintain separation during the faster sections, though the bass could have been more present. “Seasons Of Gloom” is a capable debut with several gripping passages, focused songwriting and enough character to suggest stronger releases ahead.
