Norwegian drummer and composer Bjarte K. Helland has spent years building his reputation through projects such as FastLoaders, Pitch Black Mentality and Quadrasonic, always leaning toward technically demanding music with a progressive outlook. With his solo work he shifts the spotlight from the traditional guitar centered approach and builds compositions around rhythm, making the drum kit the core of every arrangement. "Scorched" is his second solo EP and features an impressive list of collaborators, including Billy Sheehan, Jarle H. Olsen, James Pulli, Yas Nomura and Tore Christer Storlid. Their contribution broadens the musical palette without turning the release into a

collection of guest appearances. The focus remains firmly on Helland's vision, where progressive metal, fusion elements and cinematic ideas meet in an instrumental format that values structure as much as technical skill. It is an ambitious concept, especially for a drummer leading the creative direction, and it separates this project from countless instrumental releases that revolve around endless guitar displays.

"Scorched" revolves around rhythmic movement first and melody second, giving the EP a character that immediately differs from many modern progressive metal releases. The production is crisp, with Helland recording and co-mixing the drums in his own studio alongside Jarle H. Olsen, resulting in an organic drum sound that stays at the front without burying the rest of the instrumentation. The guitars weave melodic lines around constantly shifting grooves, while the bass performances add color instead of simply reinforcing the low end.

The writing balances progressive metal with fusion influences and cinematic textures, creating an atmosphere that remains engaging across the EP. The music often recalls the rhythmic precision of TesseracT, the groove oriented approach of Periphery and the melodic phrasing associated with Plini, though Helland combines these references into a style that belongs to his own project.

The biggest strength of "Scorched" is its rhythmic imagination. The drumming is obviously exceptional, though it never turns into an endless demonstration of speed or intricate fills. Every section serves the composition, making the shifting time signatures and syncopated patterns meaningful instead of distracting. The guitars and bass respond to these rhythmic ideas with enough variety to prevent the material from becoming repetitive. Several passages build tension through layered arrangements before opening into melodic sections that provide contrast without reducing the intensity. This balance gives the EP a dynamic flow and prevents the music from becoming overly academic.

"Scorched" is an engaging instrumental progressive metal EP that places rhythm at the center without sacrificing melody or atmosphere. Bjarte K. Helland shows that a drummer led project can remain musical, engaging and expressive while exploring demanding arrangements. The guest musicians strengthen the material without distracting from the main vision, and the production gives every instrument enough space to contribute. It may not appeal to everyone looking for straightforward songwriting, though listeners drawn to progressive music built on rhythmic invention and cinematic detail will discover an EP with substance and replay value.
