First World Appetite is the solo project of Dutch musician Ronald de Groot, who handles nearly every creative role on "Angel Shades Demise", from writing and recording to guitars, bass, vocals and keyboards. Drums are performed by Ayhan Alakus, while Joel Wanasek takes care of the mix and mastering, giving the album a modern and balanced production without stripping away its raw edge. Built around personal experiences and emotional struggles, the project combines melodic death metal, groove metal and alternative influences into a style that values songwriting above technical exhibition.
The guest appearance from Diffy on "Silence Of God" adds another vocal dimension, although the main focus remains firmly on de Groot's personal vision. The artwork and presentation reflect the bleak atmosphere found throughout the album, matching its lyrical direction and introspective character.
"Angel Shades Demise" revolves around depression, suicide, war, corruption, inequality and the constant struggle to stay mentally afloat. Musically, the album moves between aggressive riffing, melodic passages and occasional acoustic moments, creating contrast that prevents the material from becoming one-dimensional. The production gives every instrument enough presence, guitars stay prominent, the rhythm section remains reliable and the vocals sit comfortably in the mix with a raw, emotional delivery.
Some songs leave a stronger impression than others, mainly because several riffs and rhythmic patterns return a little too often across the running time. The songwriting is at its best when melody and aggression meet naturally, while a few sections could have benefited from more variation or stronger hooks. Even so, there is enough quality throughout the album to maintain interest, especially thanks to its honest approach and memorable emotional direction.
The more personal moments add another layer to the experience, showing that the album is not limited to anger and despair alone. Instead of relying on shock value, it focuses on genuine emotional conflict and the determination to keep moving despite overwhelming darkness. "Angel Shades Demise" is not an album that reaches every target it sets for itself, though it succeeds far more often than it misses. It offers convincing performances, thoughtful songwriting and an atmosphere that remains engaging across its eleven songs.
Some refinement in the arrangements would have elevated several compositions, though the sincerity behind the music makes those shortcomings easier to accept. Fans of melodic extreme metal with modern, groove influences will find an honest and emotionally charged release that has enough memorable moments to justify repeated spins.
