Finnish musician Harri Kauppinen returns after a decade away from releasing music with Abandoned Ocean, a new project that shifts his songwriting into English while continuing to explore the dark and introspective territory that has defined much of his career. Kauppinen is no stranger to melancholic metal, having previously been active with Beyond The Dream, and his solo work has long blended doom, stripped-down arrangements and personal songwriting. On "Inner Dusk", he is joined by guitarist Teemu Liekkala (Rioghan, Red Eleven), bassist Otto Närhi (Psychework, Nestruction), while the production comes from Hiili Hiilesmaa, whose résumé includes names such as Kypck, Swallow The Sun and HIM.
The collaboration reunites musicians with a shared history stretching back many years, giving the EP a sense of familiarity without sounding like a reunion project. Instead, it introduces another chapter in Kauppinen's songwriting, one that leans into post metal while holding onto the intimate qualities that have always been present in his music.
"Inner Dusk" sits somewhere between post metal, atmospheric doom and lo-fi melancholy, relying more on atmosphere and emotional restraint than on dramatic climaxes. The production leaves enough space for the guitars to build layered textures without burying the vocals, and Hiilesmaa gives the material a balanced sound that remains organic throughout. Kauppinen's voice is restrained and reflective, fitting the introspective themes of isolation, darkness and searching for a way forward.
The lyrics stay personal without becoming overly cryptic, making the emotional direction easy to follow. The songs unfold at a measured pace, allowing melodies and guitar lines to develop gradually instead of
chasing immediate impact. At times that restraint becomes a limitation, since parts of the EP circle around similar ideas and the dynamic range remains fairly narrow. More variation in tempo or arrangement could have given several moments’ greater distinction.
The songwriting is thoughtful and sincere, although it does not always leave a lasting impression once the music stops. The emotional honesty is one of the release's biggest strengths, and the performances serve the songs without unnecessary embellishment. The combination of post metal atmosphere and singer-songwriter sensitivity gives Abandoned Ocean its own character, although some passages could have benefited from stronger melodic hooks or more memorable transitions. None of the material sounds unfinished, although a few sections seem content to remain in familiar territory for longer than necessary.
The EP succeeds in creating a reflective and melancholic listening experience without relying on excessive gloom or melodrama, and that restraint becomes one of its defining qualities. Harri Kauppinen has returned with a release that shows experience, patience and a genuine connection to the music he writes. It is a promising introduction to Abandoned Ocean, leaving the impression that there is more depth to uncover if this project continues into a full-length album.
