Enevelde has been active in the Norwegian underground for more than a decade, operating as the personal outlet of multi-instrumentalist B. Kråbøl, whose work also extends to Misotheist, Diabolus, Mecum Semperterne!, and Kråbøl. The project has built its name through raw black metal rooted in the classic Norwegian tradition, mixing bleak atmosphere, dissonant guitar work, and a cold sense of isolation without relying on studio perfection or modern production tricks. On the other side of this split, Gjendød has steadily established itself with a lineup featuring musicians connected to Thorns, Kathechon, Sarke, Hellstorm, and Infant Death. Their approach follows the same underground philosophy, placing atmosphere, grim riffing, and old-school songwriting above technical display.
Although the two bands have their own personalities, they share a similar vision built around Norwegian folklore, darkness, and the spiritual emptiness often associated with the genre. Pairing them on a split makes sense because neither sounds out of place beside the other, and the transition between their contributions is smooth without blurring the differences in songwriting. This is collaboration between artists who have spent years refining their craft away from trends, remaining loyal to a form of black metal that values atmosphere, cold emotion, and authentic expression over studio refinement or fashionable ideas.
"Elegier Fra Avgrunnen" offers four tracks from each band, creating a balanced split where both sides contribute material of comparable quality. Enevelde opens with riffs that alternate between hypnotic repetition and darker melodic phrases, while the vocals remain distant and venomous, blending into the surrounding atmosphere instead of dominating it. The songwriting relies on gradual development, allowing the guitars to build tension through carefully layered melodies instead of constant speed or aggression. Gjendød answers with a rougher edge, bringing a slightly more direct attack built around memorable riff construction and a rhythm section that adds depth without becoming intrusive.
The production is raw throughout the album, preserving the natural character of the instruments and leaving enough space for every layer to emerge. The lyrical direction revolves around darkness, death, nature, folklore, and spiritual decline, themes deeply connected with the Norwegian black metal tradition, and the music supports those ideas through bleak melodies and an oppressive atmosphere.
The quality of the writing remains high because both bands rely on Enevelde's atmospheric character and Gjendød's colder and more immediate approach, preventing the album from becoming one-dimensional despite the shared stylistic roots. It captures the essence of Norwegian underground black metal through powerful compositions, cold and raw production, and an atmosphere that never loses focus across its entire running time.
