Diminishing emerged in 2019 as the collaboration between Lane Oliver (formerly of Feel Happiness and Yatsu) and David Brenner, who is also known for his work with Gridfailure. Despite the distance between Texas and New York, the duo built a project focused on dark ambient, drone, industrial noise, and slow moving doom textures instead of conventional songwriting. Their 2023 debut, "The Unnamable", introduced a bleak mix of improvisation, mechanical rhythms, oppressive guitar drones, and themes centered on anxiety, isolation, personal failure, and existential uncertainty.
"The Outcome" continues that direction without changing its musical language. It expands the atmosphere through a single conceptual composition divided into four chapters, drawing influence from acts such as Godflesh, Swans, Khanate, Lustmord, and Sunn O))), while remaining rooted in experimental sound design instead of traditional metal structures.
Built around an improvised dual guitar session recorded several years before its completion, "The Outcome" was gradually shaped with bass, synths, effects, layered vocals, and additional instrumentation until it reached its final form. David Brenner performs vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards, and effects, while Lane Oliver contributes vocals, guitars, synthesizers, effects, lyrics, and the final mix. The mastering by Dan Emery gives the recording enough definition without stripping away its raw character. Feelings of guilt, frustration, resentment, and self blame dominate the subject matter, giving the music a personal foundation instead of relying on abstract horror imagery. The production favors long sustained drones, distorted textures, industrial pulses, and slow moving layers that gradually evolve across the twenty four minute running time.
The combination of dark ambient, drone, industrial noise, and doom elements creates an oppressive environment, though the album rarely reaches the intensity suggested by its influences. This makes the release rewarding only for a specific audience already comfortable with experimental forms that value immersion over movement. There is commitment behind the concept and enough thoughtful production choices to prevent the album from becoming shapeless, though its pacing often reduces its impact. "The Outcome" contains interesting ideas and moments of genuine emotional depth, though it never develops enough momentum to leave a lasting impression once it ends.
