Frolic formed in Hayward in 2014 and built its name through the Bay Area underground, working clubs, regional bills and road dates before reaching its current four member lineup. The band issued the “Cry Of The Demon” EP in 2019, followed by its first full length, “Fusion Of Spirits,” in 2022. “Live At The Great American Music Hall” arrived in 2025, documenting a major hometown appearance, and the same year brought a ten city western United States tour. Guitarist and vocalist Edgar Sanchez, guitarist and vocalist Lenny Ramirez, bassist and vocalist Zak Kufeld, and drummer Elijah Post form a unit shaped by years of stage mileage. Their approach joins Bay Area thrash, death metal vocals, traditional metal leads, progressive construction, and rhythm ideas drawn from jazz and funk.
“Legacies Of Cybernetica” is Frolic’s second full length, issued through Hectic Records on vinyl, with the other editions handled independently. The album takes the speed and concentration of riffs heard on “Fusion Of Spirits” into longer forms, faster turns and more elaborate guitar interplay. The production leaves the guitars coarse at the edges, places the bass high enough to follow its movement, and lets the drums strike with a hard physical attack. Vocals sit above the mix with a blackened rasp, joined by backing voices that add emphasis without turning the choruses into crowd chants. A few transitions arrive abruptly, and some vocal phrasing shadows the guitar rhythm too closely. The damage is limited. The album rarely settles into one tempo for long, and the playing remains disciplined when the arrangements begin stacking ideas.
The lyrics bind cybernetic invasion, virtual confinement, failed experiments, institutional corruption, programmed warfare and personal fracture into a science fiction framework. Images of systems controlling thought and behavior connect easily with the present climate of artificial intelligence, surveillance and algorithmic dependence. “A Shattered Soul” brings a human angle through pain, self definition and recovery, giving the wider concept an emotional center. Frolic’s second album is aggressive, detailed and restless, with raw attack for a thrash audience and structural depth that rewards return visits. Some sections could lose a riff or shorten a transition, though the overall result marks a substantial advance from the debut.
