Aspen Sanctum formed in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with Jared Koons, Jeremy Cronk, Tim Wicklund and Bryan Neterer completing the lineup. The band draws from black metal, Midwestern post-hardcore and Americana, using the geography of the American Midwest as more than decorative scenery. Its name links the pale bark and autumn colours of regional aspen forests with the isolation suggested by a sanctum. Forests, the Northwoods, the Great Lakes and rolling hills shape the band’s outlook, presenting nature as an enduring presence against humanity’s urge to dominate it. That regional character separates Aspen Sanctum from bands using woodland imagery as a generic black metal costume. The music follows the same direction through expansive chords, melodic guitar lines and bursts of aggression rooted in cold landscapes rather than fantasy or medieval symbolism.
Written between November 2024 and December 2025, "To Withhold The Need To Conquer" is Aspen Sanctum’s debut album. Sessions took place during the opening months of 2026, with Chris Frankhauser handling engineering and mixing at Raygun Recording and Blake Bickle completing the mastering at Dynamic Sound Studios. The production is broad and detailed, placing grinding bass, single-coil guitars and relentless drums inside a large
atmospheric field. Guttural vocals and piercing screams tear across the melodic layers, creating a severe contrast with the reverb-soaked chords and modulated arpeggios. The six songs maintain forward motion across an album lasting around forty minutes, shifting between blackened intensity, post-hardcore urgency and reflective stretches tied to the Midwest’s open terrain.
The melodic writing has real substance, especially when the guitars widen beyond tremolo patterns and form long chord movements with an almost cinematic scale. The rhythm section refuses to sit beneath the guitars, with the bass grinding close to the surface and the drums striking at a pace that makes the calmer sections more effective. Aspen Sanctum’s regional focus is embedded in the music rather than explained through empty imagery. "To Withhold The Need To Conquer" is a powerful debut built from aggression, melancholy and landscape, presented with enough detail to reward repeated listening.
