Formed in Vienna in 2018, Ill Tidings has spent eight years shaping melodic black metal around layered guitars, expressive screams and relentless percussion. The debut album, “Signa Tenebris”, arrived in 2020, followed by “Hymns To Demise” in 2022. Those releases established an austere sound drawn from traditional black metal and colder contemporary strains, with melody placed inside raw production and severe imagery.
Ill Tidings has since appeared at Transcending Visions Fest in Graz, De Mortem Et Diabolum in Berlin and Cosmic Void Festival in London, taking their music beyond the Austrian underground. “Seeds Of True Rebirth” is the band’s third full length and arrives after sessions completed during the summer of 2024. The years between releases have produced longer compositions, broader arrangements and a deeper focus on destruction, death and transformation.
Recorded, mixed and mastered at Liquid Aether Audio, “Seeds Of True Rebirth” contains seven tracks across close to fifty minutes. The production retains a raw surface while separating the layered guitars, bass, drums and vocals enough for the arrangements to remain readable. Cold melodic lines rise above tremolo riffing, sudden rhythmic turns and measured stretches of tension. The vocals cut across the mix as screams of anguish, while the drums shift between rapid attacks and slower ceremonial patterns.
Ill Tidings uses long forms throughout the album, allowing themes to develop across several movements. This approach reaches imposing proportions in “Lux Ferre” and the ten minute closing track, “Abgesang”. Several ideas linger longer than their impact warrants, and the recurring changes in pace can make individual tracks harder to distinguish after the first few plays. The album remains focused through its bleak imagery and disciplined guitar layering. “Between Cold Stars And Mass Graves” opens with immediate aggression, while “Fruchtbaren Ackers Schändend Pflug” and “Kamadevas Mantra An Den Tod” bring a colder melodic character.
“Worship The Temple Of Flesh” and “Tides Of Wrath” tighten the attack around shorter forms, adding contrast before the final two compositions expand again. The German and English titles reinforce the album’s themes of desecration, mortality and rebirth, matching music that moves between fury and grim contemplation. “Seeds Of True Rebirth” is an ambitious black metal album with enough variation to justify its length, even when its extended structures blunt some of the initial impact. Ill Tidings has produced a severe, atmospheric third album that rewards repeated plays through layered detail, strong riff construction and a genuinely bleak character.
