Angest is an international black metal band formed by musicians from Austria, Belgium, Canada and France. The lineup consists of S.P. on guitars and lead vocals, B.F. on guitars, C.S. on bass and A.V. on drums. Several members have extensive underground histories, bringing experience from numerous European and Canadian black metal projects. “Perpetual Anguish” is their debut album, issued through Vendetta Records with artwork by Belial NecroArts and layout by Noircevr. Across five tracks, Angest establishes a bleak character shaped by oppressive atmosphere, emotional decay and prolonged tension.
“Perpetual Anguish” concentrates on fear, isolation, numbness and psychological paralysis, presenting the mind as a collapsing space where ordinary life becomes increasingly remote. S.P.’s lyrics examine uncertainty and personal erosion with bleak precision, steering away from theatrical excess. The guitars alternate between dissonant surges, tremolo movement and mournful melodic lines, backed by bass that adds depth beneath the more suffocating sections. Drums shift between rapid attacks and restrained pacing, giving the longer compositions enough variation to maintain momentum.
Patrick Stoiber’s mix preserves the raw surface while separating the layered guitar work, and Christian Höll’s mastering adds power without sanding away the album’s grim edges. Certain extended sequences circle the same emotional point longer than necessary, although the shorter material breaks the pattern before monotony takes hold. Angest has released a focused debut with substantial atmosphere, disciplined songwriting and a grim emotional core, placing “Perpetual Anguish” firmly within the darker end of contemporary black metal.
