Flykt formed in Stockholm in 2016, emerging from the city’s margins as a creative outlet shaped by defiance and decay. The band made its full length debut with “Charnel Heart” through Folter Records in 2019, establishing a severe form of black metal rooted in dissonance, aggression and spiritual unease. Later that year came the two-song EP “Through The Earth And Through The Sun”, after which Flykt withdrew from public view. Seven years separate that release from “Sinister Strain”, with the intervening period devoted to writing and refining the second album. Flykt’s limited output has prevented overexposure, and the long absence has allowed its music to develop beyond the raw attack of the early material.
“Sinister Strain” contains nine tracks and runs for fifty five minutes, giving Flykt enough space to construct long movements without reducing the album to an endurance test. The music combines rapid tremolo work, violent drumming, dissonant guitar lines and bleak melodic turns, drawing from orthodox Swedish black metal while introducing a more elaborate structural approach. The longer compositions build through recurring motifs, tempo shifts and carefully placed eruptions, creating genuine escalation instead of piling riffs together without direction.
A few transitions take longer than their eventual payoff deserves, though the overall pacing remains focused and the final stretch justifies its considerable size. Karl Daniel Lidén’s mix and mastering at Tri-Lamb Audio provide separation without sanding away the raw edges, with the drums retaining physical impact and the guitars forming a cold, oppressive mass around the vocals.
The production has enough definition for the layered writing to register, while preserving the suffocating character expected from music associated with Mgła, Watain, Abigor, Deathspell Omega and Marduk. Khaos Diktator Design’s artwork complements the album’s occult severity and the six panel CD digipak with its twenty page booklet, along with the gatefold double vinyl edition, gives the physical editions proper substance. “Sinister Strain” is a fierce, meticulously shaped return whose extended arrangements, dissonant atmosphere and relentless intensity place Flykt far above routine black metal releases.
