Wallfahrer is an anonymous one man band from Germany, active since 2018 and responsible for all vocals and instruments. “Anthologie Der Abkehr” introduced an epic, atmospheric form of black metal, followed by “Rattenritual” in 2019 and “Lightbringer Leidbringer” in 2020. The EP “A.A.S.D.W.” arrived in 2021, with “Den Menschen So Fern” and “In Dubio Pro Misanthropia” expanding the discography during the following years.
“Knochenkabinett” is the sixth full length release and continues the band’s interest in misanthropy, isolation, nature and human vanity. Comparisons with Nagelfar, Lunar Aurora and Helrunar are understandable, particularly in the
long melodic lines, grand scale and cold German black metal character. Wallfahrer remains detached from public exposure, leaving the music and its bleak philosophy at the front.
Across seven compositions and close to an hour, “Knochenkabinett” moves through extended melodic black metal built from tremolo guitars, forceful drumming, layered melodies and scorched vocals. The production has enough definition for the guitar lines to remain distinct, while retaining the chill and severity required by the style. “Wanderer In Den Schatten” opens with speed and sweeping melody, while the title song sinks deeper into desolation and inward contempt. “Festung Einsamkeit” and “Gipfelthron” use their long durations to shift between martial momentum, mournful guitar work and solemn peaks.
The lyrics confront recognition, vanity and the final reduction of every person to bones and dust, tying human insignificance to the permanence of nature. Some stretched sections could lose a minute or two, since several ideas reach their conclusion before the songs do. That excess is minor beside the quality of the writing, the precise performance and the emotional severity running through the album. “Knochenkabinett” is cold, immersive and ferociously composed, with enough melodic depth to rise above routine atmospheric black metal.
