Accursed Womb formed in Philadelphia in 2019, initially operating as a trio before expanding to a quartet. The band spent its early years issuing short releases at a fast rate, moving through experimental death doom, crooked death metal, and blackened extremity without settling into one narrow lane. The band name comes from a Cryptopsy lyric, an appropriate source for music built around bodily corruption, religious desecration, and malignant atmosphere. The music draws from Incantation, Morbid Angel, Timeghoul, and Blood Incantation, though Accursed Womb leans toward stranger rhythmic turns and more diseased tonal choices than a basic imitation would allow.
Mike Stevens of Timeghoul appears on "Womb Of The Ibex", drawn from "Promo 2023". Before a debut album could arrive, the band had accumulated the EPs "Crown Of Piss" and "Prison Coward", alongside the demos "Promo 2023" and "Promo 2026", giving Nespithe Records enough material for this retrospective collection. Those releases remained brief, though their contents already exposed a restless mixture of funereal drag, sudden acceleration, blackened guitar color, and warped structures. By 2026, a complete lineup had replaced the earlier project setup, leaving this disc as the dividing line between the formative phase and the coming debut.
Issued on CD by Nespithe Records, "Hymns Of Blasphemous Fornication" gathers twelve cuts made from 2022 onward and runs just under fifty minutes. The nonchronological sequence places separate eras against one another, so the shift from crawling death doom to faster, more compact attacks becomes apparent early. This choice also creates abrupt changes in guitar tone, drum presence, bass depth, and vocal placement. The production retains the character of each source, ranging from suffocating low-end churn to wirier demo sonics, and the uneven joins make the disc resemble an archive more than a unified album.
Riffs twist between funeral-paced drag, dissonant bends, tremolo bursts, and lurching acceleration, while the drums alternate between primitive pounding and busier patterns that sometimes crowd the guitars; several faster stretches collapse into a blur where detail becomes secondary to impact. The vocals stay low, cavernous, and inhuman, serving lyrics and titles steeped in blasphemy, mutilation, imprisonment, and bodily decay. The imagery follows one blunt line, and its fixation on desecration offers limited variation across this runtime.
Accursed Womb becomes more engaging when the riffs take an unexpected angle or the tempo drops into a sick, oppressive crawl, since the straighter attacks can merge together and several ideas end before reaching a satisfying conclusion. There is genuine menace here, joined by an appetite for odd structures, though the shuffled order and source-to-source sonic shifts stop the collection from becoming a coherent front-to-back album. The compilation format exposes progress as readily as it exposes unfinished writing. As a document of a young band mutating in public, "Hymns Of Blasphemous Fornication" is useful and occasionally gripping. Judged as a complete release, it is uneven, overlong, and more suggestive of a focused future album than fully rewarding on its own.
