Hesperia is the one man project of Hesperus, born from the Italian black metal underground of the 1990s. Before creating Hesperia in 1997, Hesperus was active with the Marche based band Sulphuria, whose work already explored Italian and Latin lyrics during a period when that approach was far less common in extreme metal. Hesperia developed from that experience into a long running project focused on Italian history, mythology, folklore and cultural heritage.
Its discography has moved through pre Roman history, ancient Rome and, more recently, the medieval world of the Sibillini Mountains. "Picenum" continues the direction established by "Fra Li Monti Sibillini", extending the geographical focus across the Marche region. Hesperus handles vocals, instruments and effects alone, maintaining the solitary working method that has defined Hesperia for decades.
"Picenum" is a long, atmospheric black metal work built around medieval and early Renaissance history, regional legends and folklore. The music combines the cold guitar language associated with 1990s black metal with older proto black metal influences, alongside Renaissance arrangements and folk elements integrated into the songs. The result has a distinctly Italian setting, especially through the use of Italian, medieval language, Latin and Marchigian dialect.
The historical material moves from the Da Varano Lords and the Cursed League of 1375 to the legends surrounding Pitino Fortress and the Roccaccia, then into werewolves, witches and local folklore before returning to the Sibillini Mountains and the legend of the Sibylla. The final section draws on the real journey of Chevalier De La Sale and his encounter with the inhabitants of Montemonaco, bringing the album towards a dark twelve minute conclusion. The production leaves the music suitably old fashioned, with guitars and keyboards shaping long melodic movements while the vocal delivery maintains a distinctly underground black metal character.
The incorporated folk and ambient material gives the historical subject matter a more cinematic dimension, while the extended compositions allow the stories to develop at their own pace. This is an album built for listeners who want historical and folkloric content to be deeply connected with the music, not simply used as decoration. "Picenum" has a strong sense of place, a broad musical palette and enough detail to reward listeners who will spend time with its medieval world.
