Far From Refuge is a five member band from Cambridge, UK, formed around modern progressive and alternative metal, with metalcore and melodic death metal elements entering the mix. The lineup features Suran Jayathilaka on vocals, Joél Sutherland on guitar and vocals, Matt Poskitt on bass and vocals, Jules Watts on drums, and Alistair Bell on guitar. Their previous release, the "False Flag" EP from 2024, introduced material such as "Ghost Of Eros" and "Whitemane", followed by singles including "Crystal Cove", "Neon Sleeper", "Satellite", "Starseeker", and "Tempest". The band has also received three NMG Awards in the Best Artist, Rock/Heavy category, while their live activity has helped establish their name within the contemporary UK heavy scene.
"Pillars Of Language" presents Far From Refuge with a broad mixture of progressive metal, alternative metal, metalcore and melodic death metal. The album moves between heavy guitar arrangements, melodic passages, atmospheric layers and more technical sections, with electronic textures appearing around several parts of the production. The songwriting draws from science fiction, fantasy and gaming imagery, which also shapes the lyrical atmosphere across the material. "The Vital Abyss", "Tempest", "Pillars Of Language", "Cibola Burn", "Ceres", "Leviathan" and "As We Fly Under Serpents" form a varied sequence where melodic hooks meet heavier rhythmic structures and more elaborate guitar work.
Suran Jayathilaka's vocals shift between clean singing and harsher delivery, while the backing vocals add another layer to several arrangements. Oz Craggs handled production, mixing and mastering at Hidden Track Studios, giving the album a modern studio presentation with defined guitars, prominent vocals and controlled low end. The album has enough material to establish its musical scope, although the large number of influences can make some sections sound more developed than others.
"Pillars Of Language" is an ambitious modern metal release with plenty of detail, melodic ideas and stylistic variation, though its broad approach occasionally prevents the songs from reaching the same level of impact throughout. The result is an interesting listen for anyone drawn to progressive and alternative forms of contemporary heavy music, with several strong musical ideas spread across the album.
