Mylingen is a Swedish progressive dark metal project founded in 2022 by multi instrumentalist Viktor Jonas after the end of his previous band Apathy Noir. The project has developed through the releases "Under En Svart Himmel" and the 2025 EP "Svartsyn", establishing a musical direction connected to dark metal, Swedish lyrics and Scandinavian folklore. For "Det Inre Mörkret", Jonas handles all music and all instruments, with Eric Holmberg responsible for the vocals. The lyrics are divided between Jonas and Holmberg across the eight compositions.
The recording, mixing and mastering were completed by Jonas at Studio Noir2 in Söderköping, Sweden. The artwork uses elements from Hieronymus Bosch's "The Garden Of Earthly Delights" and "Christ In Limbo", which corresponds naturally with the album's themes of darkness, ambiguity and inner conflict. Mylingen remains very much a one person musical project at its core, with Holmberg adding the vocal presence needed to complete the sound.
"Det Inre Mörkret" moves Mylingen further into progressive territory, bringing progressive rock and space rock influences into a dark melodic metal setting. The result is a forty three minutes album where guitars, keyboards, atmospheric textures and changing rhythmic patterns create a sombre and occasionally surreal atmosphere. The Swedish lyrics add a distinctive regional character to the material, especially when Holmberg's vocal delivery shifts between clean singing and harsher expressions.
The production is suitably organic for this kind of music, with the instruments occupying a balanced sonic field and the arrangements retaining enough detail for repeated listening. "Vansinne", "Utan Mening", "I Mörkret" and "Tomheten" establish the album's darker side through gradual transitions and melodic guitar work, while "Den Oönskade", "Fallna Änglar", "Norr" and "Till Slut" continue the progressive direction through changes in tempo, texture and vocal approach.
There are clear traces of Scandinavian metal tradition in the atmosphere, alongside the influence of progressive rock and space rock, creating an album that sits somewhere between melodic darkness, reflective progressive metal and atmospheric experimentation. Some arrangements stretch longer than necessary, with certain ideas taking more time to develop than their musical substance requires.
The songwriting occasionally becomes too restrained, reducing the impact of sections that could have reached a more forceful conclusion. Holmberg's vocals provide useful contrast throughout, while Jonas' instrumental work gives the album its central musical identity. "Det Inre Mörkret" is an ambitious release with enough individuality to separate it from standard dark metal production, although its longer compositions could benefit from tighter editing and more decisive transitions.
