Fogos is a black metal band from Barcelona, formed in 2021 and rooted in the traditions of second wave Scandinavian black metal. The band released its debut album, "Corpses And Ashes", in 2022, establishing a grim and atmospheric approach built on fast guitar work, forceful drumming and dark melodic writing. Their live activity has placed them alongside names such as Djevel, Ancient, Noctem and Kraanium, while the current line up consists of Saten Haz Im Un on vocals, Prozoid Zeta Jsi and Virus Tremor on guitars, A.K. Butcher on bass and Croma Man Ro on drums. "Of Wyrm And Men" is their second full length release, issued through Satanath Records and Poisoned Furrows Records, with guest appearances from Rider G. Omega of Obsidian Kingdom and J. F. Fiar of Foscor.
"Of Wyrm And Men" spends its length deep inside black metal territory, with rapid drumming, piercing guitar lines, hostile vocals and an atmosphere soaked in darkness, occult imagery and visions of death. "Wyrm", "Fogos", "Faun", "Messiah" and "Babel" are shaped around aggressive riffing and melodic guitar passages, with the music shifting between violent acceleration and more haunting sections.
The production was handled by Javi Félez at Moontower Studio, while Dan Lowndes took care of mastering at Resonance Sound Studio, resulting in a forceful and detailed presentation that allows the guitars, bass and drums to remain distinct during the faster sections. Fogos also introduces enough melodic material to prevent the album from becoming a one dimensional assault, especially through the guitar arrangements, which add an ominous quality to the faster material.
The album stays focused on darkness, speed and sinister melody, with little interest in softening its approach. Its length, around forty minutes, makes the whole experience fairly compact for this style, leaving the listener with a concentrated dose of old school black metal built around atmosphere, aggression and melodic guitar work.
