Solystalgia is a newly formed death/doom metal band built around Paul Black on vocals, Wilco on guitars and bass, and Austin Wheeler on drums, with Wheeler also handling synthesizers, electronics, and programming alongside Wilco. Wheeler’s background with Savage Oath adds experienced drumming to the project, while Tanner Anderson, known from Obsequiae, Majesties, and Crypt Sermon, appears on “Entropic”. The band’s debut arrives through Nameless Grave Records, presenting a bleak musical language focused on grief, atrocity, and inherited suffering. The lineup is compact, yet the instrumentation reaches beyond standard death/doom through atmospheric electronics and synth work.
“Solystalgia” spends its time moving between crushing doom riffs, intricate death metal guitar work, mournful melodic passages, and spacious atmospheric textures. The guitars have a heavy, low presence, while Austin Wheeler’s
drumming gives the longer compositions a strong rhythmic pull and enough variation to prevent the material from becoming monotonous. Paul Black’s vocals bring the necessary sense of despair, with Tanner Anderson adding another vocal color on “Entropic”.
The production, mixed by Austin Wheeler and mastered by Arthur Rizk, balances the guitars, drums, vocals, and electronics with a dark, expansive sound. The songwriting reaches its most effective moments when the death metal riffing meets the mournful side of doom, creating music that’s heavy in an emotional sense as much as a sonic one. There are moments where the extended compositions could use more variation, and some atmospheric sections slow the momentum considerably, yet the overall result remains compelling for listeners drawn to modern death-doom with a strong atmospheric component. “Solystalgia” is a bleak and carefully constructed debut, with enough substance to make its arrival noteworthy.
