Legion Of Decadence is a Québec, Canada heavy metal band formed in 2006, with a history that has gone through several line-up changes and a hiatus before returning in 2023. The band has released several full length albums across different periods, including "Desolation", "Yesterday’s Over", "Swing It By", "Diggin’ Up The Past" and "Checkmate". The current line-up features Karine Gagnon on vocals, Jeff Bergeron and Justin Lessard on guitars, William Lafrance on bass, and founding member Michael Dupuis-Souligny on drums.
Their background covers traditional heavy metal, thrash, progressive metal, gothic influences and occasional death metal touches, creating a broad musical space. Gagnon brings an operatic background and a versatile vocal approach, while the instrumental side is handled by musicians with interests reaching from classic metal to progressive and thrashes territory. The band also has a history of sharing stages with rock and metal acts across Québec, reflecting its long presence in the local scene.
"No Road Left To Burn" is a seven song release lasting around forty two minutes, with Legion Of Decadence pushing its heavy metal formula into several different directions. The guitars move between traditional heavy metal melodies, thrash oriented riffing and progressive arrangements, while the bass and drums give the longer compositions a more elaborate rhythmic character. Karine Gagnon handles the vocals with a strong, theatrical approach that suits the darker material best. "Stranger/Danger" adds saxophone and violin for an unusual change in texture, and"The Abyss" brings piano into the arrangement, adding another layer to the darker atmosphere.
The three part "Epiphany" sequence takes up a substantial portion of the album and leans heavily into progressive writing, with changing arrangements and extended instrumental sections. Production was handled internally, with Michael Dupuis-Souligny producing and mixing alongside William Lafrance, who also handled the mastering. The result is an album with a wide stylistic range, ambitious arrangements and a distinctly Canadian heavy metal character.
At times the material becomes more elaborate than necessary, and some transitions can make the listening experience less immediate. The gothic and progressive elements also create moments where the album moves away from its traditional metal core. "No Road Left To Burn" has enough musical substance to remain interesting across its running time, although its broad approach does not always produce the same impact from one composition to another. The result is an ambitious heavy metal album with several strong ideas, occasional excess, and a sound that reaches beyond a single style.
