Altarheart began in 2023 in Charleston, West Virginia, as the solo project of multi instrumentalist Anthony Conn, who handled guitars, bass and vocals. After releasing several singles and the full length "Deny Thyself", his brother Alex Conn joined on drums, turning Altarheart into a two member band. The expanded line up produced the "Creatures Here Below" EP in 2024, followed by a deal with Rottweiler Records for "Prone To Wander". Additional vocals come from Scapegoat on "Mortal Man" and Michael Grice of The Light Superior on "Weaken My Flesh".
"Prone To Wander" presents progressive metalcore with a strong emphasis on contrast, shifting between aggressive vocals, melodic singing, electronic textures, technical guitar work and large chorus sections. "Wayward" introduces this approach with immediate intensity, while "Consider The Lillies" places melancholy alongside harsher vocal sections and heavy riffs. "Rustbelt" moves between calmer moments and heavier attacks, while "Island Of One" packs numerous guitar ideas into its arrangement.
"Reconcile" and "Weaken My Flesh" bring a more focused approach, helping the album avoid becoming a constant stream of complicated arrangements. Anthony Conn handled the mixing and mastering, with the production allowing the vocal range and layered instrumentation to remain distinct. The material has ambition and plenty of ideas, although its progressive side can make some sections harder to absorb on a first listen. Overall, this is a substantial step for Altarheart, with enough variation to give the album its own character and a sound that should appeal to listeners sitting between modern metalcore and progressive metal.
