Fäulnis is a German extreme metal band from Hamburg, formed in 2003 by Seuche, (aka Benjamin Feddern), who initially developed the project as a largely solo affair. The early period produced the demo "Cholerik Eine Aufarbeitung" in 2004, followed by "Letharg" and "Kommando Thanatos", before the lineup expanded and the project moved further into its own mixture of black metal, doom, punk and darker experimental elements. Fäulnis released "Gehirn Zwischen Wahn Und Sinn" in 2009, "Snuff Hiroshima" in 2014 and "Antikult" in 2017, with the band later becoming inactive.
The name remained closely associated with Seuche's work and the German underground extreme metal scene. "Cholerik Eine Aufarbeitung²" belongs to the earliest stage of Fäulnis, presenting material originally recorded in 2004 and later expanded for its 2007 edition. The 2026 edition gives this early material another physical life through Eisenwald, with vinyl availability for the first time and the original material newly remastered. "Letharg", originally issued in 2005 and reissued in 2022, also receives a CD edition alongside it.
"Cholerik Eine Aufarbeitung²" is presented as a concept release dealing with an affective murder, moving through rage, escalation and the retrospective view of the event. The material has a deliberately bleak and disturbed atmosphere, with the black metal base joined by doom, punk and spoken or theatrical elements. "Invokation", "Gespien" and "Die Tote Vom Flussufer" form the central musical sequence, while "Die Lästerzungen" uses the poem by François Villon as part of the wider concept.
The recording dates from the early 2000s, and the 2026 remaster gives the old production a more suitable presentation while retaining the character of an early underground recording. The additional material extends the historical picture, including "Invokation Synthetik 2007", "30. Juli, Bewölkt" and "II". The result is less about contemporary production standards and more about documenting an important stage in Fäulnis' development. The writing is bleak, personal and focused on violence, psychological disturbance and aftermath.
Musically, the release moves through primitive black metal structures, slower doom influenced sections and experimental details that separate it from a straightforward genre exercise. It has the rough edges expected from material recorded more than two decades ago, and those qualities remain central to how the release is perceived. As a 2026 reissue, it functions primarily as an archival presentation of Fäulnis at an early and formative stage, with the remaster and added material making the package more substantial for listeners interested in the band's history.
