Antithetic is an American black metal band formed in Rochester, New York, by Hauras on lead guitar, vocals and synths, and Surma on guitar, with Nøkken on bass and Onidaiko and Andrew Dewar handling drums. The band draws from the Finnish and Russian schools of melodic black metal, combining cold riffing with epic melodies and themes connected to Lovecraftian horror, ancient gods, depression and eternal winter. The use of English, Russian and Finnish adds another layer to the album’s atmosphere, while the masked presentation places the focus on the music and its dark imagery.via Mole! records.
The material was recorded at Gavett Hall Studios, with Mikhail Amrayev and William Seastrand responsible for recording, mixing and mastering, alongside Zane Sears on recording duties. Across its 32 minutes, the album moves through melodic black metal built from icy tremolo guitars, blast beats, epic leads and a distinctly medieval atmosphere. The lyrical themes revolve around, what else, cosmic horror, ancient deities, suffering, cold and the search for the mysterious city of Kadath. Dissection, Horna, Thulcandra, Stormruler and Stormkeep form obvious stylistic touchstones, though Antithetic shape these influences into a cinematic presentation with its own multilingual character. The songwriting balances aggression with melodic passages, while the production gives the guitars and drums a defined place within the overall sound. "Kadath" presents a focused debut with a strong connection between its musical direction, lyrical subjects and visual world.
