Labor Of The Negative is an international band based across Portugal, the UK, Norway and Egypt, with its work focused on philosophy and literature. The name comes from a passage in Hegel’s “Phenomenology Of Spirit”, while the title "The Triumph Of Time And The Disillusioned" draws from Händel’s "The Triumph Of Time And Disillusion". The band’s lineup features M. on vocals, S. on guitars, J.H. on bass and T.Z. on drums, with S.L. appearing as a guest musician. Its musical language is connected to avant-garde black metal, with Virus, Arcturus and Dodheimsgard among the main points of comparison.
"The Triumph Of Time And The Disillusioned" is a demanding piece of avant-garde black metal, shaped by frantic guitar work, theatrical vocals and strange trumpet appearances. The production keeps the instruments separated for the album’s many layers to register, while the vocal performance moves from extreme delivery to more dramatic expressions. The lyrical material draws heavily from philosophical ideas connected with thinkers such as Epicurus, Hegel, Hume, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard and Durkheim.
Across its thirty four minutes, the album moves through several contrasting ideas, with the six "EpocheĢ" compositions forming its main musical body. There is plenty happening here, sometimes to the point of making the material difficult to process in one sitting. Labor Of The Negative presents an intellectually driven form of black metal with a theatrical edge and an unusual instrumental palette. The result is ambitious, intricate and deliberately demanding, aimed at listeners who want their black metal to challenge more than the ears.
