Carceral is a Brazilian extreme metal band featuring Roberto Ortega and Hard Alexandre Christiani on guitars, Victor Hormidas on bass, and Daniel Moscardini on drums. Christiani also brings experience from international touring work with Tim "Ripper" Owens and Marc Boals. "Descending Reprisal" is the band's debut full length, released through Toilet Ov Hell Records, with production handled by Roberto Ortega and Victor Hormidas, while Samuel Bassani took care of mixing and mastering. The material draws from death metal, thrash metal and grindcore, with additional influence from the dissonant side of Voivod and Immolation.

"Descending Reprisal" presents a dark apocalyptic concept dealing with punishment, collapse, power, privilege and injustice. The music is guitar driven, with rapid riff changes, shredding, aggressive drumming, abrasive bass work and frequent shifts between technical death metal structures, thrash attack and grindcore speed. Across its 24 tracks, the album moves through a succession of short, intense compositions, creating a continuous sense of instability.

The production gives the guitars a prominent position, while the drums retain enough impact to keep the faster material from becoming an indistinct blur. The darker harmonic choices add an oppressive atmosphere to the material, especially around the dissonant passages. "Hypnomachia" and "Archaic Law" represent the kind of material used to introduce the album's central aesthetic. There is a lot happening across "Descending Reprisal", and the constant movement makes it a demanding listen, with its strongest moments coming through the combination of speed, intricate riffing and bleak atmosphere.
