Mittags-Abgrund was formed in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 2022 by sole member Sch., with the debut album “Mittags-Abgrund” marking the band’s first official release. The project combines black metal and death metal through epic compositions, Russian language lyrics, and several vocal approaches, including sinister howling, grim croaking, and clean chanting. Guest drummer F. contributes throughout the album, adding a strong rhythmic presence to Sch.’s compositions. The musical references include the grandeur associated with Aeternus, Immortal, and Bölzer, alongside riffing influenced by Morbid Angel.
“Mittags-Abgrund” arrives through Darkness Shall Rise Productions in CD, vinyl LP, and cassette formats, with a total length of 48 minutes. The production presents the guitars, vocals, drums, and bass with enough separation for the arrangements to remain easy to follow. The Russian lyrics give the album a distinctly local character, while the vocal variety adds several shades to the atmosphere.
The songwriting moves between black metal darkness, death metal riffing, and broad epic passages. The guitar work is built on strong riff changes, with melodic lines appearing inside the heavier material. The drumming from F. adds variety to the rhythmic structures and supports the larger scale of the compositions.
