The Duskfall started in Luleå in 1999, right after Mikael Sandorf walked away from his earlier band, Gates Of Ishtar. The lineup went through several changes over the years, four albums came out, the band split in 2008, and it came back together in 2014. Since then it has stayed close to the old Swedish melodic death metal sound from the late nineties rather than following where the genre moved afterward. Sandorf is the only member who has been there from the start, now playing alongside Ronny Edlund & Patrik Forlund on guitars, Anton Lindbäck on bass and Sebastian Lindgren on drums.
"The Everlasting Shadows" is the band's sixth album. It was recorded mostly in a home studio and finished with a mix and master by Sebastian Lindgren at Abianaudio. Nine songs make up the album, running around half an hour, written across a decade in which personal loss and illness in Sandorf's life kept delaying the whole project. Musically, this is the band operating at its most assured. The twin guitar work carries real melody without ever softening the growled vocals sitting on top of it, and the rhythm section holds a steady pace that lets each song breathe without losing momentum.
The Dark Tranquillity and In Flames influence is still there in the bones of the songwriting, but the band shapes it into something that sounds like its own. Every track earns its place on the album, and the sequencing keeps the energy moving rather than letting it dip in the middle stretch where most albums this length tend to lose focus.
Ten years is a long gap to close with nine songs, but "The Everlasting Shadows" closes it properly. This is the strongest album the band has put its name on since the reunion, and it stands as proof that the wait, however difficult it was to get through, produced something worth the time on both sides.
