Atomic Aggressor formed in Chile during the late '80s and helped build the country's death metal underground with the 1989 demo "Bloody Ceremonial" and its 1991 follow-up "Resurrection". The band split before capitalizing on that early reputation, then returned in 2007 for a run of national festivals. A shared 7" with Death Yell arrived in 2013, followed by the debut full-length "Sights Of
Suffering" through Hells Headbangers at the close of 2014, some twenty-five years after the band first started. The "Invoking The Primal Chaos" EP came in 2019, holding the same violent deathrash the band had been playing since the beginning. Founding vocalist/bassist Alejandro Díaz and guitarist Enrique Zúñiga have anchored every one of those recordings.
Seven years separate "The Occult Forces" from that EP, and the quartet resumes at the same temperature. Eight tracks across some forty minutes of blackened death metal, thick with evil atmosphere and played with a sharpness the band has rarely matched on tape. The riff writing moves fast without ever sounding rushed, and the rhythm section hits with a blunt heaviness that pins everything down. The solos have been pulled back from the maniacal spirals of earlier releases into something darker and more controlled, which serves these songs better than pure speed would have.
Díaz's vocals sit low in the throat, guttural and threatening, while the production leaves the guitars raw and the drums loud. This is music that could have surfaced in 1989 or 1999 without anyone blinking, and that is precisely the appeal for anyone who grew up on South American death metal. Tracks like "Forms From The Occult" and "As I Descend" show a band still capable of writing real songs rather than coasting on reputation. Chile's old guard is very much alive.
