Critical Defiance formed in 2010 in the Valparaíso region of Chile and spent years building a hateful name in the South American underground through fast, technical thrash metal. Three albums came before this one, “Misconception” in 2019, “No Life Forms” in 2022 and “The Search Won’t Fall” in 2024. The line up is Felipe Alvarado on vocals and guitars, Rodrigo Poblete on drums, Mauricio Toledo on guitars, Diego Tello on bass and Sebastián Palominos on guitars, who also produced this album.
“Rivers Of Blood” is eight tracks in just over half an hour, released on CD and vinyl LP by Dying Victims Productions, with artwork by Aldo Cardemil. Palominos handles the production and the result is open, every guitar line easy to follow and the drums left organic, so the speed comes from five people playing together and not from studio tricks. The riffing is fast, angular and technical. “Innate To Kill” sets the assault in motion and “The Feeling Destroyer” bends the arrangement through turn after turn, with Poblete holding the speed steady underneath and Alvarado spitting hate over the top.
The dark atmosphere and the dramatic build of the second half give the album a face of its own, and “Valparaíso” is the proof, the longest track, opening side B and tying the violence to the blood, memory and decay of the band’s home city. That track gives the lyrics a real target. Elsewhere they stay in standard thrash anger, with “Rivers Of Blood” adding a slower pace and a liberating tone, and “Glorify War” closing as a final strike. The running order has a plan, assault up front, the tempo change at the title track, the city epic starting side B. A few tracks run at one gear for too long and blur into each other. Violent, hateful and dark, this is strong thrash from Chile with a plan behind the speed.
