Frostbite Terror is a melodic death metal band from Turku, Finland, formed in 2022. Their music combines melodic death metal with thrashy riffing and symphonic arrangements, while their lyrical approach moves between darker subjects, fictional stories and black humor. "Into The Frozen Depths" is their debut album, presenting a broad collection of songs built around winter imagery, death, battle, dark comedy and more personal storytelling. The band features Otso Turunen on vocals, guitars, bass and synth programming, Olli Kuure on guitars, Kristo Rautavuori on drums and guest vocalist Jukka Laaksonen.
"Into The Frozen Depths" has enough ideas to make its roughly forty minute running time varied, although the songwriting sometimes struggles to turn those ideas into equally strong tracks. "Frost And Snow" and "Tracks On The Snow" establish the melodic death metal base with fast guitar work and thrashy riffing, while "What Do The Dead Care" introduces a more melancholic side through its melodic passages. "Maan Multa" brings the clearest change of pace with its ballad approach, and "Gehenna" returns to heavier territory with more aggressive riffing and vocal work.
The combination of growls, clean vocals (which left me unimpressed), acoustic guitars and synth arrangements gives the album several textures, although some transitions between these elements can sound abrupt. The humorous lyrical moments also create an unusual contrast with the darker material, which gives the album personality without always producing equally convincing songwriting. As a debut, "Into The Frozen Depths" presents an ambitious mixture of styles, though the uneven writing prevents the whole album from reaching the same level throughout.
