Archgoat is a Finnish black metal band in its 37th year, working with a mix of black and death metal, punk fury, primal thrash and bestial grindcore. Its first two albums, "Whore Of Bethlehem" and "The Light Devouring Darkness", are legendary in extreme metal, and both return on CD and vinyl in an opaque red layout alongside the new full length. Chris Moyen paints the cover once again.
"Nightbringer, Lightbringer" has a less suffocating production than some earlier Archgoat releases, allowing the guitars and drums to register with more separation while retaining a raw sound. The title track uses a strong central riff and abrasive guitar leads, "The Dawn To Armageddon" shifts between fast attacks and slower riff changes, while "Blood Of Jesus Spilling Upon The Earth" pushes the blasphemous atmosphere through its lyrics and vocal delivery.
The guitar work becomes more melodic on "The Light Behind The Horns", with lower gain passages adding a different texture before the album returns to its more violent material. The Phrygian based lead work also adds an unusual melodic color within the album's otherwise primitive approach. The songwriting remains concise, the performances are severe, and the sequencing maintains a coherent progression through the record's themes. Some of the atmospheric additions slightly reduce the primitive impact that defines Archgoat, yet the core sound remains firmly intact.
