Tygers Of Pan Tang come from Whitley Bay in England and have been around since 1978, one of the names that built the NWOBHM. Their classic debut “Wild Cat” landed in 1980, and more than four decades later founding guitarist Robb Weir leads the band alongside singer Jack Meille, drummer Craig Ellis and bassist Huw Holding. John Footitt joins on guitar and makes his first appearance on a studio album with the band.
“Electrifyed” runs ten tracks and close to 47 minutes through Mighty Music, and the guitars come out heavier and meaner than ever from their recent albums. Riffs go first and the melodies ride on top, and the two singles, the title track and “Forevermore”, put that method on the table at once. Marco Angioni, a longtime friend of the band, produced it and gives the sound a modern and powerful frame, with the guitars up front and Jack Meille free to lead the hooks. Robb Weir and the newcomer John Footitt share the guitars as if they had been trading riffs for years, and Craig Ellis and Huw Holding lock the rhythm down.
The titles alone, “Rise Up!”, “The Fight Goes On” and “Revenge Is Sweet”, spell out the old heavy metal subjects of defiance, struggle and payback, and the cover by Andy Pilkington of Very Metal Art fits that. “Rise Up!” opens the album with immediate momentum, while “Revenge Is Sweet” brings the closing stretch to a heavier conclusion. The final tracks give more space to longer arrangements and guitar work, adding some variation to the album’s traditional heavy metal formula. “Electrifyed” presents Tygers Of Pan Tang in strong form, with the experience of Robb Weir and the energy brought by the current lineup coming together across a set that sounds firmly rooted in heavy metal.
