Chamber Of Unlight is a Finnish black metal band formed in 2016 as the solo project of Necrosis, a multi-instrumentalist with previous work in Deathchain, Ajattara, Shade Empire, and Trollheims Grott. The debut album, “Realm Of The Night”, arrived in 2021, featuring drummer LRH and former Deathchain guitarist Leper alongside Necrosis. The lineup expanded to six members with bassist VnoM, guitarist Infection, and keyboardist Spellgoth, making “Avernus” the first full length to feature this formation. Released through Werewolf Records, the album arrives in CD, vinyl LP, and cassette formats.
“Avernus” draws from the melodic and atmospheric side of Finnish black metal, combining tremolo picked riffs, eerie lead guitar work, and prominent keyboards with a crisp, organic production. Spellgoth’s synths play a major role in the album’s sound, adding a grand, otherworldly quality to tracks such as “Night Chasm” and “Where Light Does Not Dare To Enter”. The guitars move between icy melodies and darker, more aggressive passages, while the rhythm section provides a steady foundation for the shifting arrangements.
The mix gives each layer room to register, although the prominent keyboards occasionally pull attention away from the rawer edge of the guitars. Across eight tracks and around thirty-six minutes, “Avernus” maintains a consistent direction, with songwriting of melodic development and atmospheric detail over constant aggression. The result is a well executed Finnish black metal album whose refined production and prominent synth work will appeal to listeners who prefer the genre’s majestic, melodic side.
