Grey Shores is a Swedish atmospheric black metal duo formed in 2023 by Martin Andersson and Vilhelm Andersson, two musicians with longstanding connections to the Stockholm underground. Their previous work with bands such as Seas Of Years and Astrophobos helped shape the combination of post-rock textures, melancholic melodies, and extreme metal heard on their debut album, “Dark Waters Of Night”. Martin handles guitars and programming, while Vilhelm contributes vocals, guitars, and bass. Recorded over three years, the album was mixed and mastered by Jari Lindholm, known for his work with Enshine, Exgenesis, and Seas Of Years. The release has cover artwork by Francis Danby.
“Dark Waters Of Night” combines black metal shrieks, tremolo picked guitars, blast beats, acoustic passages, E-Bow melodies, ethereal choirs, and fragile clean vocals across seven tracks lasting just under thirty minutes. The production gives the layered arrangements a spacious, atmospheric sound, although the softer elements occasionally reduce the impact of the more aggressive sections. “Nothingness By My Side” establishes the album’s melancholic direction, while “The Withering Tree” balances melodic guitar work with harsher vocal delivery. “Herald The Dark” brings the black metal elements further forward, with blast beats and surging riffs contrasting against the record’s reflective moments.
The lyrics deal with personal loss, hopelessness, existential questions, and apocalyptic imagery, giving the music an inward looking perspective. The combination of post-rock and atmospheric black metal has clear emotional appeal, although some of the transitions between delicate passages and extreme sections lack the impact needed to make the contrast fully effective. “Dark Waters Of Night” presents a promising debut with a coherent musical direction, though the songwriting and dynamic shifts need further refinement to leave a deeper impression.
