Glory Of Kings is an American Christian metal band releasing its full length album “Roots Of The Past” through Roxx Records. Led by founding member Jonathan Johnson, a former active member of Sacred Warrior, the band draws from the melodic heavy metal and progressive metal traditions associated with acts such as Crimson Glory, Queensrÿche, Deliverance, and Savatage. Some of the material was originally written with the possibility of appearing on an unreleased Sacred Warrior album, which adds an interesting detail to the background of this release. With eleven tracks, Glory Of Kings explores themes of history, personal identity, faith, and the influence of the past on the present, combining classic metal influences with a more atmospheric approach.
“Roots Of The Past” combines melodic guitar work, driving rhythms, epic arrangements, and a darker atmosphere, placing it within the traditional and progressive sides of Christian heavy metal. “Mindwar” and “The Mystery” introduced the album ahead of release, with the latter featuring layered arrangements and a haunting atmosphere. Across the album, the songwriting moves between traditional heavy metal passages and more elaborate sections, while the shorter tracks help divide the running order.
The production aims for a full, contemporary sound, although the material does not always maintain the same level of impact across its different arrangements. The lyrical themes give the album a defined conceptual direction, with faith and historical reflection informing its overall perspective. “Roots Of The Past” offers a varied collection of melodic metal songs with strong ties to the classic American scene, though some compositions would benefit from more distinctive development to separate them from their influences.
