Death Of The Heron is a progressive metal band from Minnesota, United States, entering the scene with its debut full length, “Blood Of Yesterday”. Released through Harambe Media International, the band draws on progressive metal, death metal and atmospheric songwriting, with Opeth, Gojira and Amorphis among its stated influences. Daniel Schmitt handles vocals and guitar, while production duties are shared by Schmitt and Chad Helmonds. Will Maravelas of 14:59 Studios takes care of mixing and mastering, giving the album a carefully assembled sonic presentation for its wide range of musical shifts.

“Blood Of Yesterday” explores grief, death, desire, rage, personal collapse and the struggle to accept change. Its extended compositions alternate syncopated guitar riffs and intense vocals with atmospheric sections and melodic passages, often moving between opposing styles within the same track. The arrangements demand close attention, although the album’s length can make its more than hour long journey difficult to absorb in one sitting.

The production supports the contrast between the heavier passages and the more restrained moments, while the performances serve the music’s technical and emotional demands. The songwriting has ambition, but the frequent shifts in intensity can interrupt the flow, and some sections rely more on complexity than on memorable hooks. As a debut, “Blood Of Yesterday” presents a band with a broad musical range and a bleak lyrical outlook, though its extended compositions do not always maintain the same impact throughout.
