Gürschach is an experimental metal band from the San Francisco Bay Area, formed in 2011. “Absolutely Nothing” is their second full-length album, featuring X on guitars and vocals, Scotty McRib on bass and vocals, Leyland Reid on guitars and keyboards, and Daniel Justo-Sanchez on drums and percussion, with guest appearances by King Night on vocals and Aaron Robitsch on synthesizer. The band takes an ambitious approach to songwriting, combining an elaborate science fiction story with individual lyrical tales.

The plot revolves around billionaire Stanley Fink, a team of astronomers, and the discovery of a meteorite containing concentrated dark matter, with the investigation exposing disturbing events and the prospect of a global catastrophe. The album draws on years of writing and development, with some ideas dating back to 2009 and recording sessions beginning in 2020.

Spanning around seventy-one minutes across ten tracks, “Absolutely Nothing” combines experimental metal with an extended conceptual structure that demands attention to its changing musical and lyrical directions. “Yvylyryn” introduces the album’s strange atmosphere, while “Dawn Of A New” and “Your Crystal Ball” expand the story through extended arrangements. Guitars, keyboards and vocals share the workload, with the guest synthesizer contribution adding another layer to the album’s varied sound. The production serves the scale of the material, although the long running time and the frequent shifts between musical ideas can make the overall experience uneven.

Some compositions stretch their ideas beyond their most effective point, and the connections between the individual tales and the larger science fiction plot are not always equally engaging. The later stretch, including “The Gate To Vylvyryn” and “How To Bypass The Butterfly Effect”, reinforces the album’s ambitious scope, while the extended arrangements occasionally sacrifice momentum for further exploration. “Absolutely Nothing” is an adventurous release with an elaborate concept and a wide musical range, though its length and songwriting choices prevent every section from having the same impact.
