Myrkviði is an Icelandic black metal band formed in Reykjavík in 2025, entering the country’s extreme metal underground with a sound shaped by aggressive riffing, atmospheric arrangements and melancholic melodies. The band reached the finals of Músíktilraunir 2026 and received recognition for its Icelandic lyric writing, an important achievement for a new act working entirely in its native language. “Harmur” is the band’s debut EP, featuring four tracks that address religious fanaticism, institutional hypocrisy, war, human suffering and moral decay. These themes place social criticism at the center of Myrkviði’s approach, with religious imagery and political condemnation serving as the main lyrical tools.

“Harmur” combines rapid tremolo picking, forceful drumming and bleak melodic passages, with atmospheric sections adding depth to the aggressive foundation. “Kristur Mun Falla” introduces the EP’s confrontational approach, while “Guð Blessi Þjóðarmorð” puts its provocative subject matter at the forefront, challenging the relationship between religious belief and mass violence. The title track brings the release back to its central themes of suffering and despair, reinforcing the connection between the lyrics and the music. The production retains the raw edge expected from black metal while allowing the melodic guitar work to remain prominent throughout the four compositions.

Myrkviði occasionally relies on established black metal structures, and some transitions could use greater variation to prevent the arrangements from settling into predictable patterns. However, the combination of Icelandic lyrics, socially charged themes and atmospheric black metal gives “Harmur” a defined direction, with the short running time allowing its ideas to remain concentrated. As a first release, it presents a band with a strong thematic approach and a promising grasp of the balance between aggression and melancholy.
