Mindwork are a Czech progressive death metal band formed in 2007, with a discography that includes “Into The Swirl” (2009), “Eterea” (2012) and the “Cortex” EP (2021). Their work earned two Czech Anděl Award nominations, establishing their name within the country's progressive metal scene. After fourteen years between full length albums, the band return with “Adrift”, featuring Martin Schuster on vocals and rhythm guitars, Dominik Vozobule on bass, Filip Kittnar on drums and Jiří Rambousek on lead guitar, with saxophone contributions from Martin Plachý. The album was produced, recorded and mixed by Schuster, marking a new chapter for a band whose music has long combined technical death metal with progressive rock elements.
“Adrift” in 41 minutes and nine tracks, is using progressive death metal to explore Alzheimer's disease, memory loss and the gradual disintegration of personal identity. The music shifts between intricate guitar arrangements, forceful death metal sections, atmospheric interludes within the compositions and jazz influenced touches, with the saxophone adding an unusual colour to the album's musical language. “The Great Deception Of Mind” brings these elements together through shifting rhythms and contrasting vocal passages, while “Mess From Now On” pushes the technical side through busy guitar work, active bass lines and intricate drumming.
The interpretation of Talk Talk's “The Party’s Over” introduces a different melodic approach, integrated into the album's wider progression. The production preserves the detail of the arrangements, although the frequent changes in tempo and atmosphere occasionally interrupt the continuity between sections. The Alzheimer’s concept gives the album a coherent emotional and psychological direction, and the music reflects the subject through contrasting states of recognition, confusion and detachment. “Adrift” is an accomplished progressive death metal release with substantial musical detail, thoughtful thematic integration and enough individual touches to distinguish it within the Czech scene.
