Suffering Quota is a Dutch grindcore band from Groningen with more than fifteen years in the underground, combining grindcore, death metal, crust, and hardcore across releases such as “Life In Disgust”, “Collide”, and their split with Psychoneurosis and Herida Profunda. Their fourth full length, “Sisyphean Life”, arrives through Tartarus Records and 7 Degrees Records, continuing their involvement in Europe’s extreme metal scene with music rooted in relentless aggression and bleak subject matter.
“Sisyphean Life” revolves around the endless struggle of daily existence, drawing on the Greek myth of Sisyphus to address depression, monotony, and the repeated search for temporary relief. The twelve tracks run through short bursts of grinding riffs, rapid tempo changes, and relentless drumming, with “Cruel Rock” lasting just 34 seconds and “Slop” extending the attack beyond two minutes.
“Strain Once More” and “Again” reinforce the album’s cyclical concept through their titles and placement, while the overall production serves the music’s compressed, suffocating sound. The songwriting relies on recurring patterns and abrupt transitions, reflecting the record’s central idea, although the limited variation across such a brief running time can make the listening experience feel one-dimensional. “Sisyphean Life” offers a blunt expression of grindcore built on repetition, frustration, and the absence of resolution.
