Doctor Nez is a Colorado-based stoner rock project led by a multi-instrumentalist originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Combining heavy rock, doom, and psychedelic influences, the project draws on personal struggles and dark storytelling to shape its music. “Nothing Short Of Silver” is Doctor Nez’s third EP, with all six tracks written, performed, recorded, and engineered by Doctor Nez. Luke Prentice co-composed “Find Familiar”, while the live lineup features Prentice on bass and Brett Wutzke on drums.
“Nothing Short Of Silver” mixes fuzz-driven guitar riffs, doom-laden grooves, and psychedelic touches with lyrics steeped in dark fantasy. The EP follows a cursed individual through themes of bloodshed, unrequited love, lust for power, and the corruption of the soul, adding fantasy role-playing references to the project’s usual exploration of paranoia, loneliness, and personal collapse. “Find Familiar” brings the fantasy concept into the songwriting, while the title track delivers a shorter burst of heavy rock before “Perfectly Human” closes the release.
The guitar tone supplies the necessary grit, and the vocals retain a rough, unvarnished quality that suits the material. However, the six tracks sometimes rely on established stoner rock patterns, with limited changes in pace and arrangement reducing the impact of the darker lyrical themes. “Nothing Short Of Silver” offers a decent blend of doom, psychedelia, and fantasy storytelling, although its musical approach could use greater variation to give the songs more individuality.
