Wizard Tattoo is the solo project of Indianapolis multi-instrumentalist Bram The Bard, active since 2022, with releases including the self-titled EP, the full-length “Fables Of The Damned” (2023), and the EPs “Living Just For Dying” and “One Of These Knives” (2024). On “When Gods Had Hands”, Bram handles all music, instruments, recording, mixing, mastering and artwork, while Fausto Aurelius contributes vocals, spoken word, lyrics and the conceptual material behind the album. His vocal delivery shifts between prophetic declarations and heavily processed, mechanical tones, adding another dimension to the collaboration.
“When Gods Had Hands” is a four-track, divided in eight movements of a progressive, blackened, doom metal album, combining extended doom riffs, black metal aggression, industrial elements and progressive arrangements. The production has a raw, dark atmosphere, with vintage film samples and Middle Eastern influences adding further detail to the music. The transitions between crushing guitar sections and more experimental moments give the compositions an unpredictable direction, while the programmed vocal treatments reinforce the album’s connection between ancient mythology and technological evolution.
The lyrical concept draws from the “Book Of Enoch”, the fall of the Watchers and humanity’s pursuit of forbidden knowledge, extending the subject into artificial intelligence and the creation of new gods. References to religion, philosophy and technological progress give the material considerable conceptual depth, although the amount of information presented can make the listening experience demanding. “When Gods Had Hands” presents Wizard Tattoo through an ambitious combination of blackened doom, industrial experimentation and philosophical themes, with an approach that places considerable emphasis on atmosphere and ideas.
