Arktheos is a Canadian blackened death metal duo formed in 2015 by D. Ibson (guitars, vocals), who initially developed the project through his background in melodic black metal. T. Pill (drums, synth) joined later, completing the current line-up and contributing to the band's musical direction. Following a demo in 2023, the duo released their debut full-length, “Cosmolith”, in 2025, establishing an approach rooted in extreme metal, cosmic imagery and spiritual themes. The reissue comes through Hypaethral Records, with the album receiving its first vinyl and CD editions.
“Cosmolith” combines blackened death metal aggression with psychedelic elements, atmospheric synths and an extensive range of rhythmic changes. The seven tracks move between crushing guitar riffs, forceful drumming and more atmospheric sections, with “The River”, “Vortex Hammer” and “Stormblood” providing some of the album's most compelling moments. The production, recorded by Arktheos at Black Hall and mastered by Roland Rodas, maintains a powerful guitar presence while allowing the synth arrangements to contribute to the album's cosmic atmosphere.
The vocals add another layer of intensity, complementing the record's dark musical direction. Its lyrical themes draw from nature, ancient gods, spirituality and humanity's confrontation with the immensity of the universe. The songwriting combines extended compositions with shorter transitions, creating a continuous sequence of psychedelic blackened death metal. “Cosmolith” is an ambitious debut with strong compositional ideas, commanding performances and an imaginative approach to extreme metal.
