Gutvoid formed in Toronto, Ontario, brought to life by guitarist Daniel Bonofiglio and guitarist/vocalist Brendan Dean, soon joined by bassist Justin Boehm and drummer D. W. Lee. The band fuses modern death and doom elements with progressive song construction, creating a heavy sound loaded with massive riffs, deep vocals, and serious technical skill. Following their 2019 "Astral Bestiary" release, their 2022 debut "Durance Of Lightless Horizons", and the 2024 "Breathing Obelisk", the quartet has continuously expanded their musical attack, focusing on elaborate song structures and increasing their technical aggression. Now, they deliver their second full-length album, "Liminal Shrines", released through Profound Lore.

Canadian death metallers Gutvoid drop a massive sonic bomb on their second full-length album, "Liminal Shrines". The quartet unleashes a colossal blend of heavy/doom atmospheres and progressive death metal technicality. Listening to this release is an exercise in surviving a relentless assault of intricate riffs and cavernous guttural vocals. The band builds huge, towering structures of sound and then proceeds to smash them into rubble with absolute brute force. They combine crushing doom passages with lightning-fast death metal bursts, delivering a thoroughly brutal listening experience.

Daniel Bonofiglio and Brendan Dean tear through the tracks with monstrous guitar work. The riffs shift constantly, morphing from slow, decaying doom chords to blistering, highly technical fretboard runs. The solos are completely unhinged, shredding through the low-end frequencies with wild intensity. Dean’s vocals emerge straight from the abyss, delivering incredibly deep, guttural growls matching the terrifying atmosphere of the music. The dual-guitar attack creates a massive wall of sound, dominating the entire auditory space.

Underneath the guitar madness, Justin Boehm on bass and D. W. Lee on drums deliver a devastating rhythmic foundation. Boehm’s bass tone is absolutely filthy, rumbling underneath the guitars and adding a thick layer of sonic sludge to the mix. Lee’s drumming is completely relentless, firing off rapid double-bass kicks and furious blast beats. The rhythm section navigates insane time signatures effortlessly, driving the songs forward with unstoppable momentum. They lock into massive grooves, turning the elaborate progressive structures into headbanging anthems.

The production on "Liminal Shrines", handled at various studios and mastered by Greg Dawson, perfectly captures the sheer terror of the music. The sound is incredibly heavy and massive, allowing every instrument to pummel the listener with maximum force. The cosmic horror atmosphere is fully realized, wrapping the aggressive instrumentation in a dark, terrifying veil. The mix balances the massive low-end frequencies with the blistering highs of the guitar solos, resulting in a completely devastating sonic profile.

"Liminal Shrines" reigns as an absolutely crushing progressive death metal triumph. Gutvoid delivers a massive, terrifying musical journey across these six tracks. The musicianship is top-tier, the aggression is off the charts, and the songwriting is totally lethal. Metalheads seeking highly technical, thoroughly brutal, and completely devastating music will be blown away. This album destroys everything in its path and secures the band's position as a major force in the extreme metal underground.
