The Great Observer formed in Rome back in 2021. Daniele Z. on guitar and vocals and Luca E. on drums and vocals kicked things off. By 2023, bassist Claudio S. and guitarist Matteo A. signed on to fill out the lineup. They spent the time between late 2024 and early 2025 tracking their debut album, "Loss Of Transcendence". The Forge Music Productions handled the mixing and mastering, and Blackseed Productions is dropping this physical release.

The music on "Loss Of Transcendence" smashes Mediterranean black metal into old-school death and thrash metal. The sound brings to mind bands like Mortuary Drape and Zemial colliding with Slaughter and Master. Grim melodies combine with sudden bursts of extreme speed. Obscure tones weave through heavy riffing and aggressive drumming across the ten tracks. The musicians execute their chosen style well, offering a dark cosmic atmosphere alongside fast and heavy sections.

Lyrically, the album focuses on philosophical and existential concepts. The words deal with a universe where mankind is insignificant, observed by a distant higher consciousness. Ancient thinkers and existentialist writers heavily influence the lyrical direction. The lyrics portray the death of God and the complete collapse of established values. A strong pessimistic view of humanity drives the entire message of the album.

The songwriting stays consistent and offers a lot of good riffs. The guitar work provides a cool mix of black metal tremolo picking and heavy thrash rhythms. The drums keep a steady pace, driving the music forward aggressively. Sometimes the mix gets a little cluttered during the faster sections, masking the guitars. A few transitions between the slow parts and the fast thrash segments are slightly jarring.

"Loss Of Transcendence" is a very respectable first album from The Great Observer. The musicianship is strong, and the fusion of different extreme metal genres works well most of the time. The minor flaws do not ruin the listening experience. Metalheads into dark, old-school sounds will definitely appreciate the riffs going on here. It is a very cool debut that warrants a spin.

Score: 7.5
