Suffocation erupted from New York back in 1988, unleashing their monumental "Human Waste" EP via the Relapse label in 1991. They quickly joined the Roadrunner roster and traveled down to Morrisound Studios to work alongside legendary producer Scott Burns. That partnership forged a completely new blueprint for extreme music, relying on devastating breakdowns and furious tempo shifts. They dominated the extreme metal underground until a temporary split in 1998. They returned in 2003, maintaining their status as ultimate pioneers of the style.

"Jesus Wept - The Roadrunner Years" compiles twenty-six devastating tracks across three discs, capturing the absolute prime of Suffocation during the 1990s. The first disc contains the 1991 titan "Effigy Of The Forgotten". This legendary debut stripped death metal down to bare bone and muscle, delivering an absolutely ruthless New York alternative to the ornate scenes of the era. The musicians incorporated scalar runs, rapid-fire palm-muting, and hyper-fast picking into monstrous riffs. Rhythmic dimensions expanded drastically with blistering blast beats alongside legendary anthems including "Infecting The Crypts" and "Liege Of Inveracity".

The second disc unearths the 1993 sophomore album, "Breeding The Spawn". The production on this outing famously suffered, resulting in a muffled and severely compressed audio mix. The actual compositions underneath the sonic muck remain completely savage. The musicians crafted intense, twisted riffing structures and ferocious guttural vocals on tracks including "Marital Decimation" and the blistering title track, "Breeding The Spawn". The inferior studio sound masked the true power of these songs during the initial launch, leaving a stain on an otherwise tremendous collection of heavy music.

Disc three unleashes the 1995 triumph "Pierced From Within", a towering creation where Suffocation reclaimed their throne. Returning to Morrisound with Scott Burns, the band secured a massive and crushing audio production. The sonic upgrade allowed the intricate guitar work and pulverizing drum barrages to completely decimate everything in their path. Colossal tracks including "Thrones Of Blood" and "Suspended In Tribulation" display immense technical execution fused with total brutality. The band absolutely crushed all competition with this album, establishing a permanent high-water mark for the metal underground.

This entire compilation functions as an essential history lesson for anyone remotely interested in brutal music. Dissonance Productions packed the set with extensive liner notes penned by writer David Gehlke, alongside a brand new interview with original guitarist Doug Cerrito. Having the complete 1990s discography bundled together provides a perfect perspective on the unrelenting supremacy of Suffocation. These three albums laid the foundation for countless thousands of bands, remaining absolutely vital and destructive decades after their original inception.
